Vintage Bay Area: Film Noir & Silent Film Festivals-San Francisco, CA
Love old movies? So does San Francisco. So much, in fact, that it supports two separate week long festivals celebrating some of the best old Hollywood has to offer.
Noir City (coming up January 20-29!) is ten days of the grittiest and noiriest double-features and matinees at the city’s famed art deco screening room, the Castro Theatre. This, their 10th year, they’ll be honoring former local author Dashiell Hammett, screening 6 different films based on his works in one day, most of which haven’t been seen since the 1940’s. Femme fatales abound.
The 16th Annual SF Silent Film Festival packs 18 features into four days this July (14-17th) with live musical accompaniment from full orchestras. Both foundations use their proceeds to locate and restore neglected, aging films from the golden era.
